Notes

  • Program notes:

"A veces, el silencio es la peor mentira" is a programmatic piece that refers to the controversial existence of the "Basilica del Valle de los Caidos". The title is a quote from the Spanish philosopher and theater writer Miguel de Unamuno who was arrested by the fascists at the beginning of the Spanish civil war. According to me, his statement shows the open wound of Spain, the unspoken and dark history and the crimes still not accused. The abrupt beginning resembles the megalomaniac dimensions of the monument. The "drone" in A reflects the agonic sensation as you walk through the corridor. The flute and clarinet stand for the Gregorian chant that I heard there. The mezzosoprano sings a melody inspired by a theme that refers to the miners (who erected the building as forced laborers) and that melody is gradually overshadowed by the rhythm of Seguirya, which ultimately imposes itself on the other sonic construction of the work.
