About the composition The Poet on a Boat
The piece entitled “The Poet on a Boat” was inspired by a photograph of Hans Christian Andersen standing on the deck of a steamboat travelling down the Danube. When the boat docks close to Belgrade, Andersen observes and writes about the unfamiliar scenery (published as En Gigters Bazar, 1842).
Andersen is part of all of our childhoods. His fairytales helped us build our own fantasy worlds full of tenderness, empathy, and naïveté. They introduced us to irony, and to fear.
“The Poet on a Boat” is part of a 5-part series of musical compositions, some longer some shorter, that I have dedicated to Andersen.
Oh and that photograph? It doesn’t exist. It is figment of my imagination.
