    Brian Noyes programme note

The idea for this piece came from reading ‘Journey out of Essex’ by nature poet John Clare, written after his escape from an asylum in Epping Forest. The text relates his increasing tiredness and deteriorating mental capacities, and the dramatic relief experienced in reaching his home. It is this scenario that forms the inner narrative of the music, although it is not programmatic.

The piece uses musical material from its predecessor: one of them, a sforzando tutti chord, reappears throughout the piece marking the slowing process like the black lines in a Mondrian painting – delineating but integral. It is then, the shadowy reflection of the larger piece, a shadow of Clare's poignant text, which through Clare's own memory was what he experienced on that long escape from captivity. Perhaps too, it is the result of my memory of my previous composition, a memory of another (Clare's) memory, a shadow of a memory.
