Biography

Joel Rust creates music that encompasses kaleidoscopic textures, disintegrating mechanical systems, and a rich harmonic language that draws on spectralism, jazz, the English pastoral school, and much more. He is a PhD candidate at New York University, where he studies composition with Louis Karchin, Jaime Oliver, and Elizabeth Hoffman. His scholarly focus is sound and the city in the early twentieth century. Currently, he is developing an opera, The Conifers, with poet David Troupes, supported by a Jerwood Opera Writing Fellowship at Aldeburgh Music.

He has previously studied with Julian Anderson for a master's at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, with Chaya Czernowin at Harvard University, and with Robin Holloway at the University of Cambridge, where he completed his undergraduate studies with double-starred First Class Honours. Musicians he has worked with include Yarn|Wire, mise-en, the International Contemporary Ensemble, andPlay, The Hermes Experiment, TAK, the American Composers Orchestra, the Melos Sinfonia, Filthy Lucre, Ensemble Nikel, Mr McFall’s Chamber, and the Choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. His music has been performed in the UK, the USA, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Israel, Russia, and Colombia, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC World Service, Radio France Musique, and Radio 4 (the Netherlands). Discantus has released his work for six voices, sunt etenim pennae volucres mihi, on their CD 'Music for a King’, a program of polyphony from the millennium-old Winchester Troper. He also plays bass viol with NYU’s viol consort, The Teares of the Muses.
