Biography

[ka'mi]

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1973. [ka'mi] graduated in Musicology (1996-2001) from the UNL-FCSH and later graduated in Composition at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (2001-06). He attended composition seminars at the Gulbenkian Foundation in 2005 with Emmanuel Nunes, as well as at the Summer Courses in Darmstadt (2004 and 2010) and the IMPULS Akademie in Graz (2007 and 2011), with individual lessons by such composers as Brian Ferneyhough, Georg Friedrich Haas, Beat Furrer, Pierluigi Billone, Toshio Hosokawa and Enno Poppe, among others.

[ka'mi] was selected for the 3rd, 5th and 6th Workshop of Gulbenkian Orchestra and for the 1st Atelier of Algarve Orchestra in 2007. In 2010 his piece "Sonderart des Kreisens" was awarded with the 2nd prize in chamber music at the 5th International Composition Competition of Póvoa de Varzim 2010.

The composer has lived in Austria since 2006, where he has pursued his studies with a postgraduate in composition with Gerd Kühr and Pierluigi Billone at the KUG – University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Since then he has been researching microtonality and the string quartets of Georg Friedrich Haas in the scope of his doctoral thesis at the MDW – University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

He was holder of the FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology (Portugal) scholarship between 2008 and 2011, and also held the Composition Scholarship of the Austrian Chancellery in 2016. His works have been performed by the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Algarve Orchestra, Ensemble PHACE, Ensemble Platypus, Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble, Styx Quartet, Duo Enßle-Lamprecht, Duo FredDo, Phidias Trio Tokyo and Joana Gama, among many others.

[ka'mi]'s music has been played at various festivals and symposiums in many countries and continents, such as the Música Viva in Portugal, Steirischer Herbst/Musikprotokoll in Austria, Sonorities Festival in Northern Irland, Noisefloor in the UK, cercle in Austria, OUA Electroacoustic Music Festival in Japan, Sound-Image Colloquium in the UK, Contemporanea Acusmatica in Italy, Bienal Música Hoje in Brasil, Festival DME in Portugal, klingt gut! in Germany, ERPS in Austria, Nova Festival in Serbia, Transparent Sound in Hungary, etc.

[ka'mi]'s work encompasses instrumental and vocal-instrumental formations, ranging from solo to chamber music to large orchestra as well as electroacoustic music. It has been published by the AVA Editions, PMIC (Portuguese Music Research & Information Centre – MIC.PT) and Tre Fontane.
