Churchill, Gareth 

 
 

 

Biography

Gareth Churchill was born into a Welsh family in 1980, but grew up on the Somerset Levels. He studied in London with Rhian Samuel and in Cardiff with Anthony Powers; being awarded a PhD in composition in 2007. His commissioned output includes works for Vale of Glamorgan Festival, Musicfest Aberystwyth, Bangor Festival and South Wales Gay Men's Chorus (amongst others). Performances of his work have reached audiences in Belgium, Estonia, Italy, Japan, Norway, Spain, the USA and throughout the UK. His works are characterised by their strong harmonic identity and reflect an interest in cryptography with many works' titles providing the key to understanding their musical means. He has taught at Cardiff University School of Music, on the composers' course at Musicfest Aberystwyth and is composition teacher for Cardiff University Centre for Continuing and Professional Education.
