  • Program notes: 

    Syphony is a title formed from mixed words, each with their meanings mingling to form the idea. Using Bernoulli's principle for ‘syphons’, a fixed quantity of sound is moved from start to finish as if through a syphon. This is achieved where the electroacoustic part undergoes live spatialisation for quadraphonic sound and the ensemble picks material from the fixed quantity. In tandem to this, a constant ‘sypher or cypher’ occurs, where each instrument overtakes the stuck sound from the very beginning until the end, where finally the two parts (electronic and acoustic) fade into silence.

  • Technical specs: 

    A controller is required with some knowledge of Pure Data. A Mac computer running the latest version of Pure Data is required. The patch, a copy of Pure Data program, audio files for electroacoustic parts and readme text file with instructions will be provided. A quadraphonic sound system setup is essential - see diagram attached. A single channel microphone is needed to detect certain pitches which will control the spatialisation and must be placed overhead the ensemble. The controller will need to follow the score and initiate audio files as per the sections indicated with the patch and control the dynamic levels of the tracks as indicated. The part of spatialisation is however automated, so there should be no requirement for controller to intervene. A “panic” section is provided in the patch which allows the controller to over-ride automation should the need arise.
