Notes

  • Program notes:

The basic musical material of the string quartet Through Voices was deduced from the spectral analysis of the recorded speaking voices of four composers: Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bernstein and Ligeti. The spectral analyses produced four basic chords, each of them having a very specific colour. The composer alternates the four basic chords with musical material deduced from the spectral analysis of her own speaking voice. The basic chords are frayed in rhythmical patterns. Slightly moving sound pictures are created by means of quarter tones, and by unisons performed by two or more instruments using each a different playing technique.
Through Voices was premiered by the Spiegel String Quartet, on November 19 2013, at The Royal Flemish Academy for Sciences and Art of Belgium, Hertogstraat, Brussels, at the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Academy.
