The title of the work reflects my personal feelings after visiting the Romanian orthodox monasteries form Moldova and hearing the vesper bells into the warm late afternoon light. In order to express these feeling in a musical manner, I have turned myself to the Romanian spirituality. Therefore the Composition is based on 3 elements, specific for the Romanian traditions: The sound of the bells, the ISON  ( a pedal ) and Byzantine/folk melody. These are stylised and adapted to my own musical language, who is mostly modal with an impressionistic touch.

The Debut of the work is related to the bell sounds, suggested by the piano and melodically enriched by the viola and bass clarinet. The musical syntax is here the harmony.

The second section exploits the melodic nucleus of the viola and clarinet presented in the first part. The piano has here a colour, melodic and impressionistic role.

The third section renews the idea of the bells, dramatically transforming the sonorities by exploiting the short sounds, slap tongues, pizzicatos and by working directly on the piano strings.  Therefore, the impressionistic mood of the second sections develops into pointillism. The pointillism is interrupted by the clarinet’s cantilena, accompanied by the viola’s ISON. The melody of the cantilena results from the initial bells and the second section melodies as well.

The last section is a synthesis. All the events from the beginning are brought together again in a game of memory and time. Every musical idea is enriched by the “gain” from the whole piece, putting a new light on the beginning as well and recreating the primary sound of the bell.
