Tzeng, Shing-Kwei: Sentiment a Night on Board

Basic information

Notes

  • Program notes:

This piece is for mixed chorus with piano accompaniment. It is a commission by the Taipei Chamber Choir.

It is adapted from a poem of Du Fu (712–770 Tang dynasty).

The first section ( Adagio) is in 4/2 meter, is sung original in the Hakka language (one of the major dialect in Taiwan), for foreign choir I adapt in German language and embedded with a part of the Hakka Folksong Ping-ban (平板).

The second section (Allegretto) is in 7/8 meter. The chorus is written in a very complicated rhythm, using an atonal melody, versus the piano part which uses an ostinato rhythm in a high register to achieve contrast and  big tension. This section is sung in Taiwanese Fu-lao dialect, here I adapt in Korean language for Korean Chorus.

The third section (Moderato Andante) is in 4/4 meter. It begins in D Major, and after several mediant modulations ( it differs 4 key signatures) ends in E Major.  Taiwanese Nang-guan music is embedded in and it is sung in Mandarin, I add a phonetic pronunciation for a foreign chorus.

  • Technical specs:

mm. 19, mm.33 and mm. 95 require simple percussions and Nan-quan instruments; it’s better played by choir members.
