Basic information

Notes

  • Program notes:

Chaw (2012) refers to something that is chewed or the act of chewing something that is not to be swallowed, such as a wad of tobacco. In this work the American Minstrel song “Ching-A-Ring-Chaw” (1833), one of the songs Aaron Copland arranged in his “Old American Songs”, is “chewed up” in order to create an energetic and virtuosic work for Music from Copland House. The original tune is presented in the violin at the beginning and comes in and out of focus throughout the work. If a vocalist is available, Aaron Copland’s arrangement of “Ching-A-Ring-Chaw” may be presented first, with “Chaw” following seamlessly afterward.
