Notes

  • Program notes:

Coquette for solo flute (4’05’’) is a musical portrait of a sensuous, capricious, teasing character, whose moods encompass everything from yearning expressiveness to hyperactive agitation.
The musical material consists of a motif with arabesque-like flourishes, an ornate bel canto melody marked arioso, and a recurring longer section marked impetuoso consisting of runs, leaps and repeated notes. ‘Coquette’ has the quality of an improvisation, but its structure requires that tempi and expression marks be observed in order to achieve circularity.

The piece can be performed as a straightforward solo for flute, or with the accompaniment of a dancer or mime whose ever-changing gestures and chatter end in narcissistic pathos as the music’s closing bars might suggest.
