SPOJ (FUSION) as anti-division, as a process of monolithic integration. The contemporary world is divided into systems that are dominated by fragmentation and dispersion: the individual systems are detached. Thus SPOJ refutes the contemporary world, from which it nonetheless emerges. It is permeated by a desire for faith in sense, in daring, in the self-evidence of utterance. The first version was written for clarinet, guitar, accordion and live electronics.
Suddenly “fused” with a new idea, I undertook a composition for a larger ensemble after receiving a commission from Stiftung Niedersachsen and Ensemble Modern. Drawn by the selected material, I set out on an adventure that led me far away from the original plan. My enthusiasm for what was emerging was tempered with regret at not realising the potential of the composition that had been the point of departure: Spoj. I therefore listened to my utopian curiosity and started work on a new composition derived from the trio Spoj. Thus I soon had two compositions, different but surprisingly complementary. Solution: let there be a FUSION of the two compositions into one whole. The phase of fusing and blending was exciting, and the result is SPOJ II.
