    The Mariner’s Compass
    Lynne Plowman
(Commissioned by the Presteigne Festival in 2014, for a premiere by The Joyful Company of Singers, conducted by Peter Broadbent)
During the Middle Ages, Mediterranean mariners devised the 32 point compass rose which gave names to the winds coming from all directions. The language is the Italianate lingua franca common among sailors of the time - a mixture of Genoese, Venetian, Sicilian, Provencal, Catalan, Greek and Arabic.
The music grows from two simple motifs, one smooth, one staccato, which rotate between the voices. The two choirs interact antiphonally, in short, blustery bursts, sometimes colliding, sometimes in canon. Longer layers of harmony gradually emerge.
