  • Program notes:

Da luz e do fogo, for mixed choir a cappella.
This choral composition sets four short poems by the Portuguese poet Eugénio de Andrade (1923-2005), who has been described as “the Portuguese poet who is closest to a sense of music-poetry” (Óscar Lopes). His poetical material is, in fact, intrinsically musical; also, the structural rigour and expressive power of his poetry are quite suggestive compositionally. In essence, my music seeks to put his poems into relief — in terms of their sonority, prosodic rhythms and the (primordially luminous) meanings they carry. The four songs differ in terms of mood, texture and harmony but a common approach to rhythm unifies the cycle.
