Notes

  • Program notes:

The sonic basis of Fa-Mi-(Ly) comprises the notes F and E (fa and mi), which underpin the sonic construction of the piece. Appearing also as F-E-flat, these two notes are present in almost every second of the piece, in its themes and varied figuration, which make up its rich texture (each part has a stave of its own). Also, this simple motive, F-E-flat, is often transposed and thus 'colours' the entire piece, vertically and horizontally alike, most conspicuously and picturesquely by playing with short-spanned glissandi. In fact, for the most part, the music is 'twinkling' or 'sparkling' with tense figures in the piano part and/or the stratified strings, and the themes are almost floating and levitating over these pulsating and energetic flows, prominent in their octave doubling and parallel 'mixed' triad movements.
