Notes

  • Program notes:

Glad It Was the Sun is sub-titled In Memoriam Leland Bardwell, and is in one continuous movement. Leland was the composer's mother, who died in June 2016. The bright aspect to the title celebrates the commitment and energy in her life and work as a writer and is serious, but not dark. The piece jump-starts with a very busy texture of about ten motifs which is confusing at first, but over the course of the piece the listener adapts and they become familiar through repetition and transformation. It was written for the RTE ConTempo Quartet, for premiere in 2017.
