Mäntysaari, Lauri: Muove

Notes

  • Program notes:

The title of Muove is formed from the Finnish verb 'muovata', 'to shape' – meaning an act of shaping or moulding, or an object that is subject to shaping.
Of course, it also brings to mind the Italian word and Galilei's famous phrase "Eppur si muove!” ("And yet it moves!"). This association fits in my work too: it shows that, despite using spectral harmonies, the music does not have to be stuck on the chosen chords, but it can be constantly moving and changing shape. The overall form of the work is a rondo – always returning to the characteristic ascending triplet “theme”.
In September 2012, Muove was awarded first prize in the Young Masters XXI Composition Contest in The Hague. First performance was given by the Dudok Quartet in the competition final concert. The work may be performed separately or as the first movement of my three-movement String Quartet “On the Move”.
