Notes

  • Program notes:

This composition was written for the first “Composer Lineage” project held at Tufts University, where composers wrote for their fellow composers. The goal of the project is to encourage mutual learning among composers. Facet W is dedicated to William Kenlon, who was my fellow classmate and work partner.

The piece employs limited pitches from octatonic scales, expanding from 4 pitches from oct (1,2) to chromaticism by combining oct (1,2) and oct (0,2). To represent the different talents of William, the piece has three distinctive sections with each section exposing one special quality of the cello. The work concludes in an amalgamation of these sonic qualities through a tuneful ending, in reference to the times when I listened to William sing on stage. I hope audiences will be attracted to the sonority changes of the cello that contrast with controlled pitch material.
