Notes

  • Program notes:

Mugarri is both the consequence and the achievement of "The Laboratory of Chalks", a collection of pieces I have been working on for ten years. I borrowed the sculptor Jorge Oteiza the combination of two concepts, namely the experimental space dedicated to work and the metaphor of a fragile and connotated matter. Mugarri, which in Basque means the stone that marks the threshold, is a piece about extremes: not only those dynamic extremes which can be inaudible and conceal the surrounding noises, but also the unpredictable density and volume extremes where the orchestra boils down to three violins hinting at a simultaneously exact and blurry metrics and harmony with altered and warped sounds and timbres. Its volumes and its gaps, and therefore its exaggerations and irritability, also result from a disorientated world and existence. Mugarri is a commission by the Symphonic Orchestra of Navarre and the AEOS Foundation.
