  • Program notes:

This work was commissioned by the Taipei Chamber Singers and finished in Spring 2013. I wrote the lyrics myself. This is a song about longing for an intangible distance.

The chorus in this work consists of two groups that respond and interlace to build a complicated sonic texture. The lyrics include both Chinese (Mandarin) and sounds from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) in order to explore the sounds and colors of speech in Chinese language. For example, I isolate consonants and vowels as well as stretch and reverse some words from Chinese. When writing words that carry meanings, I specifically selected words that share similar sounds, such as "sh", "s", "i", "y", "an", "eng", "ang", and so on. These words create a unified poetic, natural, and musical flow throughout the work.
