Basic information



  • Program notes: 

    String quartet Estampie is entitled after medieval dance, from where there is the main idea of stamping and repeating of parts. In time from 11th to 14th century people were fond of dancing together, in circles - in towns or in the countryside.
    I wanted to put some of that joy into the music. Stamping denotes pleasant feelings while we dance and at the same time stamping is also demand for our rights and wishes to be fulfilled.
    I decide to make a structure of smaller parts in a scheme: A B A1 C B1 C1/ A2 B2 C2 A3
    This scheme is my variation of original estampie schemes (aa, bb, cc …or a+x, a+y; b+w, b+z…; or a+x, a+y; b+x, b+y, c+x, c+y …)

    -Parts A are composed of stamping.
    -Parts B are composed by long flows of sound in less usual techniques (harmonics, double -harmonics, “air noise” sounds etc.
    Parts C are composed with melodies in polyphonic structure.
    In its contents there is the explanation:
    -Parts A are connected to society relation (dancing together, fighting for rights).
    -Parts B are connected to the flow of time and view from above as the eternal foundation for all human acting.
    -Parts C are connected to human desires, passions, expressions.
    Besides I adjusted music to two numbers from Fibonacci succession ( 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21)
    I used numbers: 13 for the first part and 21 for the whole piece. All the parts A, B and C are composed by two parts, except first C, which has three parts. Therefore we have:
