Notes

  • Program notes:

Every piano tells a story. 20 Pianos tells the story of 20 pianos from around the world, amplifying their different tones, timbres, tunings and histories – from Steinway instruments at Abbey Road or Sydney Opera House, to battered primary school pianos or forgotten out-of-tune family pianos. The sound of each piano is sampled, and photographs and oral histories documents each instrument live.
The composition is for solo pianist, inspired by the stories of the pianos and their owners. The New Radiophonic Workshop created bespoke software and hardware, to transform a simple table into a virtual piano, calling up images of the sampled piano at the same time as its sounds.
