Fuček, Viktor: Golem

Basic information

  • Program notes:

Golem (Hebrew: הגולם ) in Jewish mysticism is human animated anthropomorphic statue. Belief in the possibility to create object based on the belief that good people have the power of the creator (God). Term “Shem”, which animated golems, is based on the Kabbalah and according to this doctrine, it is possible to repeat the God’s act of creation using the correct combination of letters of God's name.
In some tales (for example, some versions of those of the golems of Chełm and Prague, as well as in Polish tales and version of Brothers Grimm), a golem is inscribed with Hebrew words, such as the word emet (אמת , "truth" in Hebrew) written on its forehead. The golem could then be deactivated by removing the aleph ( א) in emet thus changing the inscription
from "truth" to "death" (met מת , meaning "dead").
This divine principle is inherent for people and gives them creative power. Each work, artwork included, is the result of perception, experiences and personal background. In this audio-visual installation the visitor / spectator himself becomes the creator and makes their personal artwork. Thus everyone can animate his golem.
The Music of the Golem project works with elements of harmony. 22 different consonant chords (22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, symbolically) forms the basic skeleton of a spatial composition. Chords are interpreted by any instrument from group of chordophones (piano, String Orchestra) and free aerophones (organ, accordion), or human voices (choir). Sounds can be created also a synthetic way using electronic devices (such as keyboards or any distinctive ones). The chords are matrices of structures of the tonal system, i.e. complete set of used chords excludes its reproducibility (turnovers, transposition). Nevertheless, all chords are used 12-tone total chromaticity. The chords are placed in a given area and transferred to the area, according to a predefined "maps", taking into account their logical arrangement within certain structures in the basal harmonic progression. Their intensity (Dynamics) is in cooperation of the whole space very sensitively balanced.
In the central point of the artefact (installation) it is clearly defined in the structure of the texts of the total chord of 22. It is continuous across the full spectrum of its tonal chord matter. Every visitor (percipient) with their movements within a closed system of the installation is creating their own, unique text, their own personal Golem: the sounding harmony of reality. Their movements are coordinated by the rhythm, dynamics, and so its perception of dramaturgy. Each visitor is hereby becoming a creator of a unique interpretation, which may not be repeated. As the legend of Golem, the Act of creation is finally a matter of only a unique and unforgettable one person creation. On the other hand, consciousness is an infinite set of individual materializations (interpretations) to fulfil the authors’ concept to transcribe golematic idiom with the Elimination of inchoative "figural" implementations.

  • Technical specs:

Recommended version works with live performing:
It is suitable to used 6 (minimum) up to open number of players on any of the specified group of instruments, best ACCORDIONS (or electric organs, a.k.a. keyboards)
With accurate number of chairs, music stands and lightning (best a clip-lights placed on the stand).
Other version (more developed via new technologies) should work with any number and kind of detector of movement connected with player(s) (each detector for 1 chord, 22 in total).
Visual part of the installation will be created as a reaction to specific space (site-specific). Spatial articulation will be made as a labyrinth. Dividing construction should be made from white cardboards approximately 2 meters high. This will prevent visual connection but at the same time allow the sound to spread freely. Inside of maze either live performers or adjusted speakers will be installed in different parts, in different heights and angles. Multiplication, reduction, channelling of sound waves in combination with a random visitor movement creates a unique personal composition. Floor will be fully-covered with thin layer of soil (about 1cm) and will serves as a medium to record movements. Afterwards is possible to follow spectators’ movements and read it as a performative drawing or personal notation.
