The title, Se Luo represent merely sounds rather than actual meaning in the Chinese language. In English, Se Luo are pronounced the same as “Say – law.” The melodic materials and music structure originates from the style of Chinese folk singing. To perform this work, it requires two mixed choirs, which respectively stand for two groups of people, who sing back and forth to each other on the top of mountain like a conversation. It is one of the most symbolic characters in Chinese folk choral tradition. Moreover, this piece highlights the recreating of the fact that singing is an entertainment as a part of the daily life to those minority residents (singers), rather than a formal performance.
