Notes

  • Program notes:

Echoes of String was not only written as a reproduction of the performing tradition of Chinese folk musicians, but also an imitation of the timbre from Chinese traditional string instruments. The string quartet is treated as one union - the generator of echoes, meanwhile, the string orchestra is treated as 18 individual voices - the echoes.

  • Technical specs:

Conductor DOES NOT cue throughout the entire the pieces, instead:

    i. Only cue the quartet and orchestra for the seven main sections (I, II, III…) when the pizzicato appears which is indicated with the dashed line.
ii. Only cue the quartet and orchestra for the secondary parts (01, 02, 03…) when the dash line appears.
iii. In general, every part of the string orchestra is not designed to play together with each other. The echoes are supposed to be created by the randomness and individual pauses as notated in the score.
