Drakulić, Sanja: Drive

Basic information

Notes

  • Program notes:

Impetus or impulse is common for all meanings of word “drive” (driving, controlling a vehicle, road, an identifiable route, path between two places, part of computer, an innate biologically determined urge to attain a goal…).

Main idea of composition was to express the drive as „impetus“ by music elements – some imaginary drive for imaginary motion towards the imaginary goal. I was inspired by „drive theory“ – motivational theory in psychology, which is based on the principle that organisms are born with certain physiological needs and that a negative state of tension is created when these needs are not satisfied. When a need is satisfied, drive is reduced and the organism returns to a state of homeostasis and relaxation. Drive tends to increase over time.

The opening signal points the direction of the whole composition. “Drive” was compulsory composition at 6th EPTA / European Piano Teachers’ Association – International Piano Competition, Osijek, 2009.
