Notes

  • Program notes:

The Greek word ‘Abyssos’ denoted the great deep or the bottomless gulf. So the main idea to the piece is expressing the idea of unfathomed depth or void through textural shifts in the two instruments. It represents a realm outside of time and space that is accessible and a place beyond time and space from which emanate all possibilities. The musical figures are set in a wider palette of contrasting sound worlds in which dark pigments with bright timbres, rough surfaces with smooth musical gestures are mixed. There we are facing challenges that require a transformation of mentalities and behaviors. Old certainties are destroyed. The feeling of falling into the pit of despair or fear of ‘taking the plunge’ into darkness of annihilation penetrate through mysterious layers of our subconscious. And we are witnessing opening the new gates into the depths of our unconscious hopes and desires.
