Cohen, Allen: Two Twilight Sketches

Basic information

Notes

  • Program notes:

Two Twilight Sketches was inspired by the beauty of the natural world, and the feelings it can evoke—peacefulness, ecstasy, awe, and sometimes fear. Each movement represents the emotions felt at the end of the day in a remote wild place: one in the glow of late afternoon and early evening, and the other in the dimness of approaching night. Blue Mountain Lake is a small lake in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, but the title is meant to suggest any beautiful, remote lake, especially at the end of the day when the setting sun envelopes the earth in a magical haze in which anything might happen—until the sun sets and peace descends. Voices of Earth and Sky is the title of a book (by Vinson Brown) about Native American vision quests in remote places. It seems appropriate for a piece that tries to suggest two aspects of evening in a remote forest: the sounds of nature that we can hear, and the voices of those who came before that we can imagine.

  • Technical specs:

The Horns always sound a fifth lower than written.
For orchestras with only one timpanist and one percussion player, there is an alternate set
of parts for the first movement in which the timpanist also plays some percussion. The
second movement has only one Percussion part, but it can be divided between two players.
The Vibraphone is to be played with the motor always off.
