Notes

  • Program notes:

Nor’field (2016), for solo violin was the third short piece I wrote in a series of four aesthetically related works for the solo string instruments. Collectively called Compass Points each of the pieces explores harmonic material stemming from one of the principal four compass points and uses a form (loosely) inspired by a that of a musical tradition in that direction.
In the case of this work the harmonic material came from a cypher of ‘north’ (B, C, D, B) and the piece unfolds in a manner suggested to me by a Highland bagpipe performance. In this way it could be described as a theme and variations, of sorts.
