A room, a combined living/bedroom, to be decorated – redecorated. Two chairs, a red carpet and a large coffin. Against a wall stands a painting, a portrait of a smiling face. This picture reassembles the woman in the drama. / It is a room, but the room is set in motion by the play, it tranforms; it becomes a lair, a tomb, a scrapyard, a cemetary. An arena.
The strange meeting that takes place in the play Traum ("Dream"), with the subtitle "A grief and joy play of the language", with its continual language games, proverbs, doggerel, turning inside out of words, shows that language is Katarina Frostenson’s true chief character. Her poetic plays in the spirit of Maurice Maeterlinck take as their theme the connections between language, thinking and identity.
The writer Katarina Frostenson was born 5 March 1953 in Brännkyrka (Stockholm county). She was elected to the Swedish Academy on 27 February 1992 and admitted on 20 December 1992. She has been awarded, among other honours, the Great Prize of the Society of Nine in 1989, the Bellman Prize in 1994, and the Swedish Radio Prize for Lyrical Poetry in 1996.
