Notes

  • Program notes:

The string quartet "Mokranjac" is a piece composed by Brkljačić and commissioned by the Mokranjac Music School in Belgrade, on the occasion of the establishment of the String Quartet "Mokranjac" in 2010. This quartet represents a continuation of the tradition of the first string quartet in Serbia, the founder of which was Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac in the late nineteenth century in Belgrade.

The composition is conceived as a theme and seven variations on the fragment "On the Stone of Confession", from Mokranjac’s movement of the Requiem: “Њест Свјат”. Also, short segments of certain songs from the first, third, fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh Garlands were woven into the texture of the flow of music of the composition, whereby Mokranjac himself is, as a unique document, present in Brkljačić’s work.
