Bouchard, Linda: Réfraction

  • Program notes:

"Réfraction" was commissioned and premiered by Vancouver New Music along other works chosen around the idea of 'Song'. For me, the fundamental quality of a song is its inherent potential for lyrical expressiveness. In “Réfraction” I explore lyricism through texture and found that a sound or light wave’s direction of propagation, as it switches medium, was exceptionally dynamic and somewhat magical, lyrical in its own way. An orchestra made of only string instruments makes this exploration possible. The ability to create a wide variety of colors with the simple friction of the bow on the strings, and with the careful use of pizzicato, vibrato, tremolo, natural and artificial harmonics, the rapid succession of those techniques allowed the complexity of refraction to be explored with little limitation.

In this first quarter of our complex 21st century, with the urgency of the tasks we face, I appreciated the challenge to explore the poetic of expressiveness and how I could compose an unsentimental yet emotional music that still aspires to beauty.

“Réfraction” is dedicated to Giorgio Magnanensi.

“Réfraction” is built with a simple chord progression, no modulation, lots of unison and octaves; the “source material” is present throughout the piece but the variations and transformations are relentless, sudden and numerous.
