  • Program notes: 

    Shikantaza is the tenth piece in a series of works for instrument and live electronics I have been composing over the last few years. For a while I had been interested in writing a piece for guitar that featured slow glissandos, just intonation and long sustained tones, all of which are not typically heard in classical guitar music. The lowest two strings are tuned in unison and one is detuned at various points throughout the piece to alter the beating patterns, creating “organic” accelerandi and rallentandi. The electronics feature a combination of real-time additive synthesis (which “freeze” the sound), moving blocks loops, pitch shifting, and delays.
