Blake, Michael: ...only the song of the birds

Notes

  • Program notes:

Michael Blake …only the song of the birds - Pastoral (after Stravinsky) for mezzo soprano, flute/alto flute/bass flute, kannel and cello was written at the request of Ensemble Resonabilis. The vocal part draws on bird calls I recorded in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho (in southern Africa): I was staying in the village of Morija where birds were just about the only thing I heard. I borrowed some of the onomatopoeias for the text from the Sesotho songs of one of Lesotho’s greatest composers Joshua P Mohapeloa. There is a strange little coda at the end in which the four musicians change to more unusual instruments: kazoo, ocarina, Jew’s harp and Swanee whistle. The piece was composed between February 2014 and June 2015 in South Africa and Italy and lasts about 12 minutes. (Michael Blake)
