Blackmore, Callum: Extract from 'Hymns'

Basic information

Notes

  • Program notes:

Hymns is an exercise in musical enlargement: an existing musical idea blown out of proportion; magnified beyond its usual semiotic confines; extended, expanded, engorged. I wanted to take the concept of a hymn, a religious song of praise to deity or deities; which, in Lutheran tradition, is sung by the congregation and/or choir of a church service; and enlarge it beyond its normal parameters to create a kind of mega-hymn. Hymns still retains many of the characteristics of a traditional hymn: it is, at its essence, a song of religious praise. However it is a traditional hymn that has been expanded in duration, scope and complexity.

The included score is an 8 minute extract from a 35 minute staged cantata.

  • Technical specs:

Mixed choir with soprano soloist, tenor soloist and two male soloists singing in falsetto. There is optional staging.
