Bjarnadottir, Hafdis: Kronan

Basic information

Notes

  • Program notes:

In October 2008, Iceland’s national currency, the króna, collapsed on the heels of a gradual decline since 2007. This stirred up a discussion in Iceland about whether to adopt a different currency, one of the options considered being the Canadian dollar. Krónan is based on Icelandic financial graphs and charts from the period 19 July 2007 to 26 January 2009. The piece is written for a chamber ensemble, with the additional electric guitar improvisation played by the composer herself.

  • Technical specs:

Usually features the composer improvising on electric guitar (roughly written out as boxed text in score). Another option is to use pre-recorded electronics instead of electric guitar.
Tech ride: If the performance features the composer playing the electric guitar, then an electric guitar amplifier will be needed. If pre-recorded electronics are used instead, then a computer needs to be plugged into a PA system (stereo).

A grand piano; will be prepared by pianist with blue tac.

The composer will bring an electric guitar/computer, four thermos bottles and the toy bird.

Should any of the percussion instruments be unavailable, equivalent replacements can be used.
