Notes

  • Program notes:

Apophany originally referred specifically to the psychotic experience of delusion as revelation, but it has since come to represent the general human tendency to see patterns or connections in random information. Where as an epiphany is a sudden moment of real insight, apophany is the gambler’s “lucky” streak, the face of Jesus on a piece of toast, the Man in the Moon, and Wall Street’s modus operandi.
Humans are in many respects, pattern-making machines, with our minds and perceptions constantly striving to impose order and logic on the chaos that surrounds us. This tendency is what elevates us as a species, yet ironically if we are not careful, it is also the very thing that may destroy us in the end.
