Notes

  • Program notes:

This piece of mine was commissioned by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and was dedicated to Mr. Prof. Liu Shun.
My relationship with the Chinese culture became very strong in the near past. I had the possibility to be part of a fieldtrip organized by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China last year. We traveled through the whole country, saw different theatrical performances, operas and listened to different kind of concerts. At the end of this project we were asked to compose two pieces; one for Chinese national chamber orchestra and the other one for big orchestra. The first piece of mine called Odes (诗经) was premiered in Shanghai, December 2017. My FROGcerto has never been recited, yet.
As far as this piece is concerned, I was deeply interested in to react to the frog as an accompaniment instrument for theatrical situations. I saw several dramatic performances in China, which had no musical layer with the exception of the set of frogs. It was impressive how a sequence of a single piece of wood could accompany a whole-night performance. It was strongly able to express the whole scale of the different human-expressions. My goal as a composer was to visualize this kind of dramatic behavior of the frog, which has the main role in my piece. It is like a real instrument: has melodies and well-articulated musical phrases. I regard my piece as a usual concerto, but together with the slow developments and the extreme time-management it is more experimental than retrospective.
I would be exceptionally glad to be able to listen to my piece FROGcerto, because for its unusual instrumentation it is impossible to manage an interpretation in my country.

    Máté Balogh,
    05. December 2017.
