    This is the first in a series of pieces for string instruments that explore the distribution of detailed
    multi-layered structures through simple combinatorial processes. It was begun in London in 2006
    and subsequently revised and continued in the following years. Étude Oblique I presents two
    independent situations between which no causal relation is apparent; it thus points at the possibility
    of abolishing temporal relations via such lack of causality. The string quartet is treated here as a
    dense body in which the different instruments share a common register, yet assuming the inherent
    differences in timbre shaped by their physical characteristics.
