Notes

  • Program notes:

The title of this work refers to the concepts of “tacit knowledge” and “citation”, and together this refers to the idea that a musical work will appear inside of an historical context of musical codes. Tacit-Citat-ion takes some of its inspiration from works by Kaija Saariaho, Salvatore Sciarrino, Giacinto Scelsi, and Hans Abrahamsen. The aesthetic appeal of these composers can be found in the fragile, textural, and weightless quality of the musical gestures that this relationship brings to the string quartet.

  • Technical specs:

It's an advantage if the performers use a tablet (ipad or similar) for reading the score. Turning paper pages can be destructive for this work due to the quiet dynamics and short length of each of the four movements. The work requires some “rest” between the movements, and in general. On the other hand, seeing the staff as a whole is important for reasons that concern the timing of each instrument, and the work can hardly be performed from parts.
