Shades... to Colors, for piano and string quartet
The work is written in one movement, and it is divided into four sections which are played without a pause. The materials within the piece are subjected to gradual progression, from their primary, abstract form into a clearer melodic and harmonic structure. Within the forth and concluding section, the various motives which were played earlier merge into one another. This somewhat resembles an action taken from the art world, that is, a process of mixing different colors together in a color plate. In this work, the resulting new 'color' is more substantial in terms of length, dynamics, range and content. The piano part undergoes a similar, gradual progression within the piece: from merely accompanying the heterophonic string texture in the opening section, it becomes a soloist in the concluding section.
