String Quartet No. 2 | Sebastian Adams

The first movement was written for the RTÉ ConTempo Quartet in July 2016. The second movement was written the previous year and explores euphoria. Both are standalone works which together form a full string quartet. After I composed the first movement, I realised that three of the main elements had unconsciously developed out of (respectively) a concert I had recently been to, the TV show I was watching at the time, and the noisy urban environment I had been working in. Of the few other elements (apart from a coda, the piece is a fragmentary mosaic of about seven components), one is a quote from my Work for Harpsichord (2012), which I had been told the ConTempos are fond of. This work seeks a style which aims to access the full spectrum of musical expression – from desolation to ecstasy – in an individual voice.
