Notes

  • Program notes:

The poetic principles of the piece SYMPHONY 1 are based on old Balkan folk music. My aspiration was not aimed towards either imitating or reconstructing authentic folk songs but to give my subjective interpretation of pagan Slavs’ music heritage.
    The movements are as follows:
I La Grotte de Glace, ice cave in French, is a sombre song of an imaginary procession.
II Evocatio, a Latin word meaning summoning which has both a magic and a ritualistic connotation – and in this movement it is an invitation to dance.
III Festa, an entry in the Italian dictionary meaning holiday, celebration – in SYMPHONY 1 it is a frantic dance.
IV O alter Duft, is an ancient mountain yodelling on imaginary woodwind instruments. The piece was named after the poem by Albert Giraud. The title itself as well as the text of the poem suggest this movement's mood. The verse 'o alter Duft aus Märchenzeit' translates as 'oh, old fragrance of magical times'.
