Notes

  • Program notes:

Italian 15th century text about the "cruel Amarilla" was earlier used by Monteverdi, Marenzio, Artusio and other great composers. The piece was comissioned by the Antiphonus ensemble for a concert dedicated to the text. The composer's idea was to renew the tradition of the a capella singing. It was written for 5 voices, just like Monteverdi's piece from the “Il Quinto libro dei Madrigali a cinque voci”. The musical language reminiscents the style of an era, but it also moves to other worlds, it makes use of other musical styles, languages, enters the area of a musical gesture, music theatre, it uses modern technology, pre-recorded voices, it is sung in different languages - Italian, English, imaginary language... In a word - it is still a madrigal and it wishes to stay a madrigal.

Note: The piece was previously never performed in Canada.
