Biography

Zhang Haofu (1952-) composer, tenured professor at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Brussels, member of the Belgian Ministry of Culture Contemporary Music Review Committee. Graduated from the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, the Royal Conservatory of Music of Brussels, the Ecole Normale Supérieure of Paris and the Georges Pompidou Institute of Modern Music of Paris (IRCAM).
In 1990, his work, “Le Cours du Temps - for wind and percussion orchestra” won the first prize at the 4th Havre International Composition Competition in France. In December of the same year, he was the first laureate with his work “Crépuscule - for cello and orchestra” at the 13th Valentino Bucchi International Composition Competition in Italy. In 2002 and 2006, he was three times awarded by the Belgian Royal Academy of Arts for his works “Second String Quartet”, “Third String Quartet” and “La Voûte Ethérée for piano”. In 2007, the Royal Conservatory of Music of Brussels awarded him the Darche Frères Heritage Award for his outstanding achievement to the composition field. In 2014, he was nominated for the SABAM awards as one out of four outstanding composers in Belgium by the Belgian association of authors, composers and publishers.
In 2001, 2004 and 2007, respectively Musiques Nouvelles Orchestra, Belgian Sinology Institute, Royal Conservatory of Music of Brussels organized three concerts dedicated to Haofu Zhang’s works. In 2003 and 2004, the Dexia National Piano Competition of Belgium selected his work “Riverside” for piano solo as the set piece to be performed by candidates. In 2011, Chinese television CCTV dedicated a full documentary about his musical career. Since 1995, he benefited every year from grants awarded by the Belgian Ministry of Culture Fund to outstanding composers.
From 1982 to 1987, he was a composer in residence at the China Broadcasting Corporation symphony orchestra. Since 1987, he lives and works in Europe. His work has been performed at Festivals of modern music in many countries in Europe, North America and Asia. Among others, the Radio France Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Opera House Orchestra of Belgium, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the French Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Belgium, the Musiques Nouvelles Orchestra of Belgium, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Belgium, the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders, the Brussels Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, the Taipei Chinese Orchestra, China Central Nationalities' Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra have worked with him and commissioned works from him. In 2005, Cypres Records in Belgium published his album "Qin - Xiao", in 2009, Megadisc Classics Records in Belgium published his album "Théâtre pour Deux".
Since 2002, successively, the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, the Capital (Beijing) Normal University, and the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, appointed him as a visiting professor. The China Central Conservatory of Music, the Huaqiao University and the Hong Kong Academy of Music invited him to give lectures on his works. In 2007 Beijing Modern Music Festival invited him to a series of lectures and performances on "Personal works and European modern music".
Since 2009, he has been invited as a member of composition and analysis jury by the Luxembourg Conservatory of Music. In 2013 and 2014 he was invited to Metz (France) Conservatory of Music as Chairman of the composition jury. In 2013, he was a member of jury at the first international Composition Competition jointly organized by Luxembourg and Hong Kong. In 2014 he was a member of jury at the 8th "L' Espace du Son" International electronic music competition in Belgium.
