Biography

Petra Vermote (°1968) is a Belgian composer. At the Ghent Royal Conservatory she obtained several First Prizes : for music theory, guitar, chamber music, harmony, counterpoint and fugue. In 1994 she obtained the 'Higher Diploma Guitar’, with Baltazar Benitez. At the Antwerp Royal Conservatory she obtained her Master’s Degree, specializing in Composition, studying with Luc Van Hove (1999). She attended master classes with composers such as Yannis Xenakis, Helmut Lachenmann, Luca Francesconi, Fausto Romitelli… In 2000 she was the first and only young Belgian composer selected for the First International Composition Seminar for Young Composers organized by the Ictus Ensemble, a renowned Flemish ensemble for new music in Brussels. Petra Vermote is employed at the University College Ghent, at the faculty ‘School of Arts’, where she teaches ‘Coaching and Musicianship’ in the Master of Music in Composition, ‘Accompaniment’ for guitar, and ‘Instrumental Methodology’ for guitar. Vermote obtains composition orders from and work of her is performed by all important Belgian ensembles and orchestra’s such as Spectra Ensemble, Ictus Ensemble, Champ d 'Action, Emanon Ensemble, Hermes Ensemble, Vlaams Sinfonietta, I Solisti del Vento, Ictus Ensemble, Het Collectief, Brussels Philharmonic, Flanders Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Flemish Philharmonic., … Work of here was premiered and performed on festivals such as Festival of Flanders, Transit, Ars Musica, and in all the important venues in Belgium. Work of her was and will be performed in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Russia , Ukraine, Mongolia, the USA, Canada, Bulgaria,… Petra Vermote wrote music for orchestra, ensemble (also with voice) and choir, chamber music, and music for solo instruments. She wrote also music for numerous projects with other art disciplines such as music theatre, dance and cartoons, and for non-western instruments (ud, quanun, kemanche). Most of her works were recorded and broadcasted by the Flemish Radio Broadcasting Centre and 9 of her works have been released on CD. Petra Vermote obtained several awards for her compositions : the Tri-annual Composition Award Youth and Music - 2001, the Award “Antoon van de maand” (Antoon of the month) – 2003, the Award for Contemporary Music Flanders-Québec - 2003, and the Award “Laureate of the Academy”, granted by the Royal Flemish Academy for Sciences and Art of Belgium – 2007. Since 2010, she is a member of the Royal Flemish Academy for Sciences and Art of Belgium.
