Verduin, Janco - M - Netherlands 




In his music Janco Verduin (1972) researches perception and how we categorize this perception. The last couple of years his style has seen a development where the focus is more on changing sound constellations and less on so-called note-to-note relations. The human brain has a preference for pattern recognition and in his music Verduin turns his attention on this aspect of active listening. Of course it is possible to let the music just roll over you but he's looking for something more than just the sensuous. Verduin explores the border where the perception of the listener (and this will be different for everyone) gets overloaded with information. By changing information densities the listener experiences moments of tension and release (just like classical functional harmony). By playing with this the attention of the listener will be guided through an abstract narrative structure without being forcefed an unambiguous meaing. After his studies Industrial Product Design and Musictechnology, Verduin studied composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Louis Andriessen, Martijn Padding, Gillius van Bergeijk and Richard Ayres. He has cooperated with and written music for Ensemble Modelo62, Nieuw Amsterdams Peil, SPECTRA ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble, Orkest de Ereprijs, ASKO ensemble, Cantus Ansambl and the Dutch Student Orchestra amongst
others. Verduin's music is frequently being played in the Netherlands and abroad, on concerts and festivals like the Gaudeamus International Musicweek 2008, 2009 & 2010, Iordens viooldagen 2010 and November Music 2009, 2013 & 2014.
