Biography

After a brief attempt at the study of veterinary medicine in Košice Juraj Vajó, Slovak composer born in 1970, graduated from the composition class of Prof. Ivan Parík at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Bratislava, later getting his PhD there in 2008 under the leadership of Prof. Vladimír Bokes. He also participated at the Sommerakademie Reichenau with Prof. Kurt Schwertsik and in summer courses in Ostrava and Český Krumlov with Alvin Lucier, Tristan Murail, Frederik Rzewski and X. Chen. In 2011 he was awarded the Ján Levoslav Bella prize for the orchestra piece “Midrash”. Juraj Vajó has since 1998 been on the faculty at the Conservatory in Košice in Slovakia, teaching music theory courses, and he also teaches Liturgical Singing at the Greek-Catholic Theology Faculty at Presov University. Since 2007 he has been working for the Slovak Radio as well. He is a member of the Urban Hudák chamber ensemble. He lives and works in Košice.
