Biography

Mikel Urquiza (1988, Bilbao) studied composition at Musikene (Basque higher school of music) with Gabriel Erkoreka and Ramon
Lazkano, later at Paris Conservatoire under Gérard Pesson. In 2012, Urquiza embarked on a fruitful collaboration with the Diotima string quartet, which premiered his quartet Ondar as well as White nights, four songs based on Paul Auster’s poems (featuring the German soprano Sarah-Maria Sun). The premiere of a second string quartet will take place in 2016. Last year, Urquiza wrote the first act of the Paris National Opera production Maudits les Innocents. In May 2015, he did a residency at the French Academy
in Rome (Villa Medici). He has worked with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, L’Instant Donné, SMASH and Basque National Orchestra, among others.
